There are various requirements imposed on today's machinery systems, such as multi-functions, miniaturization, and user-friendly human interfaces, in addition to high performance, such as high precision and high efficiency. Therefore, the field of mechanical engineering is beginning to take up a position, beyond the conventional framework, as an interdisciplinary boundary field with electrical engineering, control engineering, and computer science. This department aims at not only creating highly precise/intelligent machines and Nano/Micro scale devices, but also establishing the design methodologies. Typical examples include research on ultra-precision machine tools, NEMS and MEMS devices, and medical devices/systems, such as surgery robot systems and ventricular assist devices, in collaboration with Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

In order to cultivate talented engineers and researchers who can engage in such broad and diverse fields, the Department of Mechano-Micro Engineering invites applicants not only from graduates who majored in mechanics, electronics, control, information, materials, and biotechnology, but also from those who majored in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and biology. In addition, the department provides instructional guidance to students to help them acquire deep understanding and insight in a wide range of engineering fields. For example, students with a mechanical engineering background are given guidance regarding developing an understanding of electrical engineering, and students with an electrical engineering background are helped to develop an understanding of mechanical engineering.
